Times have certainly changed for millennials seeking reputable careers or jobs after college. They now realize that engaging in internships as undergraduates is a recommended pathway to securing a worthy job postgraduation. Once at a company, some will remain, while more and more seem to be moving to different companies where they can enjoy higher wages, flexible scheduling, greater work–life balance, increased vocational skills, and being more valued for their contributions.

The challenges in determining the right job vary, but they usually involve considering factors such as prior work experience, your passion, and whether an MBA program or taking a gap year is the right choice for you.

There is another option to consider: should you take a job after college to gain experience with a small company, where you may have the chance to become a big fish in a small pond, or do you opt for a job with a large company that will bolster your résumé and offer higher financial rewards while possibly sacrificing some of your health?

My advice? Even if you enroll in an MBA program, you should develop certain career plans, whether it be investment banking, analyzing potential mergers and acquisitions, or working for a start-up tech company striving for an initial public offering.

In determining the right job, consider these qualifications:

1.Competence in the field you endeavor to pursue

2.Compensation and security

3.The risk involved associated with venture capital or private equity

4.The affordability of graduate school
